Safety And Security with Advanced Smoke Detectors

Safety And Security with Wireless smoke detectors

Deaths from fire burns are amongst the most common unintentional tragedies all across the globe. With so much advancement in technology, we have been introduced to several devices and phenomenon that help to prevent such accidental happenings. Advanced smoke detector is one such device that not only senses or detects the smoke / heat / fire but also alerts people with a loud electronic horn.

Today, the market seems to be dotted with countless smoke detectors and fire alarm panels. Smoke detector manufacturers club these devices with hi-tech sprinklers that shower heavy flow of water immediately on the zone where there is a fire. With a heavy use of these fire alarm panels or smoke detectors, the injuries and deaths from fire have been reduced up to a large extent.

Most Common Types of Smoke Detectors

Generally, you will come across two types of smoke detectors in the market:

Photoelectric Detectors
As the name suggests, these detectors work on a phenomenon based on the laser lighting. The device is designed in a way that triggers a bell every time whenever it is unable to ‘see’ the laser light. This means, if there is a fire of smoke near the detector, it will distract the path of light coming towards the sensor. And the very next moment, you hear the alarm indicating smoke or fire.

You can see the similar detectors in the threshold of the entry of any shopping mall or store. The laser light is fitted on one end and the photo-detector on the other. Whenever you pass through the threshold, the light gets blocked for a moment and the detector triggers a bell.

Ionization Detectors
Ionization detector is the most advanced type of smoke detection device that is based on the phenomenon of ionizing radiation. The best part with this detector lies in the fact that it is cheaper in cost and is capable of detecting even a smaller amount of smoke or heat. The device is clubbed with an ionizing chamber with two plates (designed to attract positively charges oxygen & nitrogen and negatively charged electrons).

Whenever there is smoke or fire, the smoke particles attach to the ions, due to which the current between both the plates gets dropped. This simple phenomenon triggers the alarm.

Though both types of smoke detectors are effective and popular among people but the ionizing detectors are designed to respond more quickly in comparison to the photoelectric detectors. You may choose any of them for your home or office premises but you must be aware of the technique and functioning of both the types. It will help you understand the technical fault in case of any failure, and also in switching the alarm off whenever you are cooking food in the kitchen.

Install. Inspect. Protect. Smoke alarms save lives

Types of Smoke Alarms The two types of smoke alarms are: 1. Ionization 2. Photoelectric You need both — because they detect differently — smoke, or flames, and you never know what type of fire might start. USFA recommends every home have a)Both ionization AND photoelectric smoke alarms, OR b)dual sensor smoke alarms, which contain both ionization and photoelectric smoke sensors Where to install smoke alarms Smoke alarms should be installed and maintained both inside and outside of sleeping areas and on every level of your home. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions carefully. If you’re installing hardwired smoke alarms, have a qualified electrician do the installation. Making sure your smoke alarms are working A smoke alarm can be powered three different ways: 1. Disposable 9-volt batteries 2. A non-replaceable long-life lithium battery 3. The alarm is hardwired into the home’s electrical system. The 9-volt batteries that power smoke alarms should be replaced at least once each year. You can time the replacements with seasonal or time changes. Long-life lithium will power the smoke alarm for about 8 to 10-years. Once the battery is dead, the entire smoke alarm unit, battery included, needs to be replaced. Be sure to test your smoke alarm every month and replace the entire unit every 8-10 years. It takes just a few minutes of maintenance, for years of protection. What to do when smoke alarm has false alarm When a smoke alarm sounds while you’re

Should Poets Cook? 20 characters?

The stove is hot,
potatoes in the pot.
Now, what was that?
I’ll be right back.

Two more lines,
I need some rhymes.
Two hours more,
Something from before….

Now, what could it be?
Think, now let me see.
Smoke alarm blares again
From cooking, they should refrain.

Not mentioning any names, of course.Without a Doubt.

PEPCO Donates Smoke Alarms to Citizens of Prince George’s County

The Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department graciously accepted a generous donation of smoke alarms from PEPCO. The donation was made this morning while at the Line of Duty Death Memorial, located at the Cranford-Graves Fire Services Building in Landover Hills on March 1, 2012. The Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department has historically gone door-to-door within our communities, spreading fire safety information and checking smoke alarms. When a home is in need of a working smoke alarm, the Department installs one at no cost to the resident. Smoke alarm checks are a staple of the fire service and community outreach efforts. We do this because we know that having a working smoke alarm increases the chances of you surviving a fire in your home by 50 percent. Tragically, we have seen home fires where loved ones have perished, and the home did not have a working smoke alarm. Working smoke alarms save lives. The generosity of organizations providing us with free alarms enables us to help you. PEPCO is a true public safety partner, providing the Department with free smoke alarms that we in turn install in your home—Keeping Safety First to ensure everyone goes home. PEPCO has donated 7000 smoke alarms over the past 8 years. Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor acknowledged the donation of smoke alarms, saying, “We graciously accept the 1000 smoke alarms and 30 hearing-impaired smoke alarms that PEPCO is donating to us today. We accept these life-saving

Smoke detector in apartment fell?

I live in an apartment, where the door to my bedroom does not close all the way, and if it’s forced shut it gets stuck or sticks. Before bed, I randomly closed my door not realizing it got stuck until the next morning, when I went to open it, I had to pull on it, the force it took to open it knocked my smoke detector off my wall(it’s outside above my bedroom door), is it my place to replace it, or the owners? Also they do inspections(pest control/alarm inspections/maintenance) if I explained what happened, would i get in trouble?
